It is often at this time of year that couples come to the Church saying that they are would like to be married next summer. Sharing in the couple's discussions as they happily look forward to this very special day in their lives is always a pleasure. It is more than just a special day, in fact, as it marks the beginning of an even more special life for the couple together, united publicly and permanently in God's sight.

For each person, finding someone so right for them that they want to be with that person always, and discovering that the one they love feels the same, is a real cause for joy and rejoicing. Love binds people together with delight and a delicious blend of harmony, humour and happiness, and, if more difficult times come along, love provides caring, compassion and consolation.

People often think that weddings have to be very expensive – although sometimes the excuse of saving up for a big wedding is used as a reason for not thinking about the real meaning of a relationship or whether it is likely to last. Church fees for a wedding are usually quite a small part of the sum, as ideas of big receptions, expensive clothes and long honeymoons sometimes take over from thoughts of the actual purpose of a wedding – which is just to be joined in marriage!

Christian marriage is a creative relationship built on a sacred, public, life-long agreement, declared and celebrated in the presence of God. If you are in a good relationship which you want to last, perhaps now is the time to talk about a wedding.

Love comes from God: it is God who teaches us how to love, sharing his love with us so that we can love each other, each in a special way, and love him, too.

With every blessing for you, whether you are single, married or engaged,

Ann
